preparing the garden
We are now preparing our garden for spring planting we just added our compost to the soil and turned it in we do this every year. We have gotten very good results doing this a good return in vegetables. We always use organic seeds. We seem to have a hard time with the tomatoes for some reason so this year we are stating our seeds in pure compost to see if this will help them out a little bit and when planting them in the garden when ready we will fill the whole with the compost and saturate with water and to see if this will help them to thrive here.
If any of you have any ideas on how to make seedlings tomatoes thrive here in the south please come to this blog and leave a post for us we would appreciate it.
come and visit us here with any information to help us home gardeners increase our harvest at the end of the season we can all learn from each other so stop by the blog and leave us a blog on how you make your garden happy.
with many thanks from Earth Friendly Society

Rhubarb who would have known
Grow yourself a patch of Rhubarb and it grown really fast you get yourself a two for one plant great for making pies and a good bug deterrent for the gardens and after you boil the leaves down discard those in your compost pile every part of the plant is used no waste.

We as a society
We as a society need to be more conscious of what we are doing to our Planet. Less is better if you buy water in the bottle single serve reuse it refill and reuse.
Try buying items that have less packaging the garbage that we produce in this country is incredible.
Earth Ship Houses are a great way of reusing the trash that we produce I am sure there are many more ways of using trash we throw away in our land fills. The point is that if we choose to buy more consciously and let the companies know how we fell about excessive packaging if enough of us let them know it will make a difference in how they package their products after all they want us to buy their products. Change comes in numbers and if enough of you feel strong enough about making change in time it will happen.
Now I am not going to say I don't use items that are plastic because I do, but I reuse them until they are no longer usable. Let me give you an example I have two of my grandchildren that live with me so I bought a box of glad sandwich bags to use for their school lunches. My oldest granddaughter( 8 years old) came home from school yesterday and said Grammi why don't we buy a sandwich holder that way we wont use plastic bags for my sandwich, great idea I said then out of her mouth came here I have been saving all of the bags from my lunches so we can use them to freeze some of the vegetables we get from our garden well my heart melted at 8 years old she gets it.
With this I say to all of you out there teach your children the importance of less is more and teach them that recycling is a good. Teach them the pride of growing their own food being self sustainable They are our future and the future of our planet they love to learn and always want to be helpful Now is the time to teach them the importance of keeping our planet healthy and our landfills empty.

Re-Using your old sand box
We have an old sand box that the kids are no longer using so we are going to recycle it into another garden just for the children now they can help with the family garden also but I thought it would be a great idea to let them have their own little raised garden and what a great way to recycle that old sand box.
so needless to say they are very excited to get started on their very own garden.
by having your children take responsibility for their own garden or even helping with the family garden this is a great real life lesson for them and a great way to instill in them being responsible for what they eat.
so our plans for their garden are radishes, cherry tomatoes, snow peas, and some green beans I let them choose what they wanted to plant and as I thought they choose there favorite vegies.
another thing we are planning on doing is taking 1 picture a day and do a slide show at the end so when there garden is ready to harvest we will put the slide show together and show the growth of the plants everyday.
This will show them that the care watering, weeding that they have done from start to finish has given them a wonderful harvest of vegies that they love to eat.
This is a couple of things that you can do with your children or grandchildren we will post some pictures as we progress with our gardening.
Now we would love to here some of your gardening ideas and please feel free to post some of your pictures on our blog we would love to see them.

Growing your own food
In the last 5 years we have grownn most of all of our vegies. We have saved on an advarage about $900.00 a year by doing this. The plus to this other than the saving of money is that we know what is in our food or to say what is not in our food pest, chemicals and so on.
We can and jar our food that we grow and it last us all the way up untill the nest harvest.
We are in the South Georgia area so we are lucky we have a long growing season last year we did two plantings of our greens. Now it is that we can not plant everything we would like because of space issues but we have this great litttle farmers market called Farmer Browns were all the local farmers bring there harvests to sell. The prices are very resonable and this way we are supporting our local farmer.
I would love to here how you grow your own food and how much money it has saved you over a years time.
The best thing is we are showing our grandchildren how great and gradifing it is to grow and eat your own work truly the fruits of your labor,
We are now thinking of doing honey bees do any of you out there have any suggestions on this new indevor we are thing of embarking on, We look forward to hearing from you with many thanks

Love to here your Ideas
We would love to here some of your ideas on gardening and what works best for you.
For example do you use worms in your garden ? Or old school way with good old fashioned organic fertiliser like cow poop. Are you using your compost and what seems to do the best in your area for growing vegis, How you keep the bugs off of your plants to keep them healthy and happy for a great harvest.
